UNITING AND EQUIPPING CIVIC GROUPS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE

The coalition of platforms is the highest decision making body of UCSOND. It consists mostly of seven executive members of each of the six civic unions of the six coastal districts namely: Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Ahanta West, STM and Shama. Major decisions of the organisation are taken at such meetings.

On the 14th and 15th of August, 2014, about 60 representatives of UCSOND members were assembled in Takoradi to review the 2011-2014 strategic action plan which ends in December, 2014. The coalition also made proposals for the preparation of a new strategic action plan for the next three years (2015-2017). Other issues such networking and advocacy came up for discussions.

Panel and group discussions were the key strategies adopted to deliberate on the issues raised at the meeting. Participants were grouped into districts to discuss the implementation challenges of the three year strategic plan and make proposals for the new strategic action plan for the next three years.

The panel discussions afforded the participants the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications from the Executive Director (Wisdom Quaiku) and the programmes coordinator (Michael Nyarku) of UCSOND on issues bordering on financial, programmes and operations of the secretariat since the last meeting.

The issue of sustaining UCSOND beyond the STAR-Ghana and Care funding facilities took center stage during the discussions. Members unanimously agreed that the secretariat should leverage on the large membership of UCSOND to set up a Credit Union for the organization.

Capacity building on advocacy and information sharing sessions were held on the 15th of August, 2015. The capacity building workshop was to equip the leaders to undertake advocacy on issues confronting member groups and community members in their respective districts. The information sharing session also afforded the participants the opportunity to share their success stories and challenges. Almost all the representatives were most appreciative of the work UCSOND is doing, especially in areas of advocacy and capacity building of its members.

Representatives commended UCSOND for ensuring that the rights of the people are upheld at all times. They enumerated some of the notable achievements of UCSOND such as liaising with the authorities of the gas infrastructure to pay compensation to land owners who were affected by the gas infrastructure project.
